Ampleforth

Ampleforth is an experimental ‘rebasing’ cryptocurrency, which aims to mitigate the volatility found elsewhere in the crypto markets. Hosted on the Ethereum blockchain, AMPL uses smart contracts and oracles to alter its supply in order to dampen price movements. AMPL is not a stablecoin, but neither does its price fluctuate as much as conventional cryptocurrencies. It is a new type of crypto asset.

What is Ampleforth?

Ampleforth is an algorithmic token that is not collateralised with any other assets. Its price floats freely in the market. However, the key difference with other tokens is that holders own a proportion of the total supply of tokens, not an absolute number. Once a day the overall supply of tokens is ‘rebased’, and the number that appears in the user’s wallet is changed as a result. If the price of AMPL is more than $1, supply is increased to dilute holdings and make each unit worth less. If it is less than $1, supply is decreased to incentivise upwards price adjustment. In this way AMPL is supposed to gravitate towards $ 1.
